The Braid of Artemis: Weaving Together Life, Death & Art

Join Susun and D. Yael Bernhard, illustrator of two of Susun's books, for a candid discussion about the weaving together of Yael's art with her experience as hunter, forager, and mother. Yael will reflect upon her years of providing her children with wild meat, foraging wild plants and fungi, making homemade medicine – and integrating her deep sense of communion with the cycles of life and death into her work as an artist and writer.
    *********
    D. Yael Bernhard grew up in New York's Hudson Valley and began painting at the age of 13. She studied art at Purchase College, The School of Visual Arts, The Art Students' League of NY, and graduated from Empire State College with a BA in Visual Art & Communication. Her work is also influenced by African art and ancient cultures from around the world. Yael is the illustrator and/or author of over forty children's books, including The Girl Who Wanted to Hunt (Holiday House, 1994).

For almost twenty years she was an active hunter of deer, wild turkey, and black bear with both shotgun and bow – a source of inspiration and nourishment for her art, writing, and physically demanding lifestyle. Today Yael focuses on foraging wild fungi for both medicine and food, along with her favorite wild plants.
